Pensions v Property…
I’ve been aware for a very long time that my pension is nowhere near as good as my property portfolio. When I calculated how much of a pension I would have on one of my schemes if I had stayed employed under my former employer at the same salary… I would have ended up with roughly £54,000. That’s surely not enough, to last out my retirement… I plan on having as much fun as possible at that time in my life so £54k isn’t going to cut it.
Yup, I can see myself in this plane when I retire- off to some wonderful location!
That’s why I turned to property.
I knew that if I amassed some assets I wouldn’t need to depend on my pension to support me. It’s a belief I continue to hold and will consistently work on building a portfolio that will support all of the fun I’m going to have in my old age.
Yet, I was having a convo with another lecturer at the University the other day and he summed it up perfectly… ‘Why would I put my trust in something (a pension) that could all be taken away from me in the whim of a new politicians idea’. I hadn’t thought of it like this, but I COMPLETELY got it, it’s so true! Having property puts YOU in control of YOUR money.
Yes, OK, right now there is a hell of a lot of tax to pay on your properties. Yes, OK, that’s down to the whim of the Government. Yet they can’t take it away from you because you own the property. It is yours to restructure at your own whim to make sure that you will get the best out for it… and yes for me that means when I reach retirement age I am going to party like a rock star (or something equally similar).
