For the Love of (Hotel) Pillows…

As I get further into my exploration of Interior Design, I become aware that details within a house are of utmost importance.

I’ve also found that you can spend less money on some things in the house, and that some things are worthy of a bigger budget.

All I know is that when it comes to my bedroom and my pillows… I am, well, a bit of a perfectionist.

“White, fluffy, luxurious, comfy, secure, deluxe”- these are a couple of adjectives that come to mind when thinking about pillows. Unless you live in a cave with a vine of Ivy covering you for protection, using more grr’s and arr’s to express yourself than actual words and spend hours grinding stones to get a fire going- you will care about the quality of your pillows.

Pillows are important. At least we are in agreement about that. Right?

Where we may not be in agreement is about the best kind of pillows given the numerous varieties there are. This of course comes down to preference, affordability and accessibility.

Say you live in London and have had the pleasure of taking a weekend trip to Paris with a couple of good friends. Say that this is a ‘once in a blue moon’ occasion and you and the girls want to go big and splash out.

You and your friends write a list of criteria for the trip:

“I’d like a place close to the Eiffel Tower”, says one friend. Another claims there’s a fantastic new restaurant on the banks of the Seine that she wants to try out. It’s my turn. I blurt out, “I want to stay at a hotel with the comfiest, most delectable, soft pillows. A large bed all to myself with white linen that is firmly pressed, soft, fresh and welcoming”.

It’s true and I’m not ashamed of it.

(I’ll also have you know that that weekend away was one of the best of my life and that the bed and pillows had something to do with it; the Parisian wine was close behind in second place!)

I have assembled an essential list to recreating the best “hotel-bed-experience” at home:

  1. Spend some money on your matrass.
  2. Colour is ultra-important. I’d suggest going for crisp white.
  3. Sheets? Make sure that you have a matrass cover (you get those delicious feather-filled ones that you literally sink into), fitted sheet (or even two) and a top sheet
  4. Invest in an iron and actually iron your sheets
  5. Duck down pillows- at least 6 of them!
  6. Get your lighting right- soft warm. A dimmer works well.

So? What are you waiting for? Go out and get the bedroom you will never want to leave again.

Until next time, see you in dreamland.
