Calling all Landlords, as of the 1st February 2016 it is now your responsibility, under the Immigration Act 2014, to check that your tenants have the right to rent in the UK.

If you don’t do this (or your letting agent, who takes over responsibility if you instruct them to do so) you could be fined up to £3,000. Ultimately you are taking over from the Home Office in preventing illegal immigrants from residing in the UK.

So what do you need to do? Check proof of ID before signing the tenancy agreement, and take copies, and make sure that your potential tenant has the right to rent in the UK, if they don’t then you should not let your property to them and inform the Home Office.
