What’s all the fuss about curtains?

Ok What’s all the fuss about curtains? This week I have been looking around Georgian houses and as a buy to let Landlord I always want to make sure my tenants can hang curtains or blinds. It’s a nightmare to get someone in after tenants have moved in, because of the fuss of the tenant complaining of no privacy, sleepless nights and then hating what I choose. It’s always best to hang some thing prior to the tenants taking occupations so it’s a part of the decor I keep a really close eye on.

I’m so excited that each and every day I am motivated to ‘get out there’ and follow my passion. This week has been all about Georgian-styled windows, they are huge sash affairs and can prove tricky to dress if they are a last thought.

I saw 4 properties this week, all of the windows were different sizes and shapes. Tall and wide or tall and narrow, perfectly square or more rectangular.

The reason is light and air

Simple, clean and bright is for me, a timeless design

One house, in particular that I viewed this week had a wonderfully inviting feeling. The windows were opened wide (despite the cold) and its large frame gave a perfect view of the outside; it was liberating.

Windows are important, they are the frame which gives you perspective into and out of the home. And if windows are important, then too should be the curtains that drape, hang and enclose them.

Since seeing this house, I was inspired to do some research on curtains. Of course, curtains form a piece of a large pie. They should be designed so that all pieces in a room should work together to complement each other. One should take into consideration the other pieces of furniture in the room.

By complement, I also mean contrast. If you are lucky enough to have a weekend-getaway house, why not experiment more boldly with the kinds of curtains you choose?

A deep shade of curtain, bold in big windows

Brightly coloured curtains that contrast the otherwise monochrome feel of the home. How about light and wispy materials that delicately sways in the warm breeze?

Wait. We don’t live in an eternal Italian summer time. This is England!

Practically speaking, I think that double- backed curtaining suits our country well. They serve the purpose of keeping the cold out and the heat in. But what is to say that you can’t have some fun with them anyway?

Bright blues complementing dark brown frames

Raw silk in light blues and yellows. Exotic prints, highly decorative.  Patterned shades of charcoal to neutralise or an elegant cream to add a certain je ne sais pas? Check out this link to a fabulous article that will give you tons of great ideas.

Whatever you choose, do your research! I hope I have inspired some of you to get out there and start exploring the wonderful world of curtains.
